Blogging can be a fun hobby to work on in the evenings or a full-time money making business. It’s all how you go about it. When I first started blogging a few years ago (before The Financialholic) I never imagined that you could make money blogging. Now to make serious money from blogging it’s more than just creating a blog and updating it a couple times a month. Some websites out there might make you think that’s all you have to do but I assure you it’s not.
This post will show you how you can start your blog from scratch. It’s up to you after you create your blog to either turn it into a business or a hobby to enjoy. Happy blogging!
Think of a Topic
What do you want to blog about? If you’re going to treat your blog as a hobby you can make your blog about whatever you want. You don’t even need to have a topic.
If you want your blog to be profitable you should pick a topic or niche. My blog is in the personal finance niche. I blog mostly about money related topics. There are many different niches out there from weight loss, lifestyle, mommy or daddy blogs, etc. When picking a niche it is helpful to pick something you’re interested in. If you pick to write about fashion but have no interest in fashion you’re not going to want to stick with your blog and lose interest real quick.
Also, for a money making blog, your content should be something that gives value to your readers. They don’t want to read about how awful your day was, they want to learn something.
Pick Your Domain Name
If you decide that you’d like to make money off of your blog one day you will need to pick your own domain name and hosting. A domain name or DNS is your web address. Like mine is thefinancialholic.com. Domain names are also a fancy way to hide your IP address which is technically your website’s true address.
It might take you a while to come up with your domain name. You will want to choose something that’s easy to remember and not hard for someone to type in. You’ll also need to pick something that hasn’t already been claimed. Believe me, many of the ideas you may have right now have probably already been claimed already, so it’ll be a good idea to come up with a list of potential domain names. Check below to see if the domain name that you want is available.
Sign Up For Hosting
A self-hosted blog is important if you plan to make money from it. You can sign up at Bluehost for only $3.95 per month plus a free domain registration. That’s not bad to start a business when most businesses take a whole lot more money to start.
When signing up with Bluehost you will receive:
- Free Domain
- Free Site Builders
- 1-Click WordPress Install
- 24/7 Support
Next you’ll need to install WordPress onto Bluehost, to do this follow these instructions:
- Log in to your Bluehost control panel.
- Find the Website section and select Install WordPress.
- Welcome to the Marketplace! Click Get Started to continue.
- From the drop-down menu choose the Domain name you would like to use for this application. Anything entered in the field following the domain name will be a part of the URL.
- If desired, enter a Directory.
- Click on Next.
- Enter Admin Information
- Site Name: This will be the name displayed on your site. This is not the URL, but simply the name used on your site.
- Admin Email Address: This will be where your login information will be sent.
- Admin Username: The desired login name for your application
- Admin Password: The desired password for this application
The MOJO Marketplace installer will take a couple of minutes to install your application. Once done:
- Select My Installs from the top right.
- Find the domain install and click Login.
Purchase a WordPress Theme
If you plan on creating a money making blog it would be wise to invest on a custom WordPress theme. There are tons of different themes at different prices available. Find one that fits your style and niche of your blog.
I prefer clean and simple type themes. Remember to find a theme that is mobile browser compatible as many people use their cell phones to browse these days.
After you have your blog up and running, what you do with it is up to you. If you’re only blogging for a hobby then you can post whenever you want and post whatever content that you want. You will want to set up all your pages like your about me page, your contact page, etc. You will also want to tweak the settings and appearance of your blog until you have it the way you like it.
If you want your blog to be profitable, follow these tips to get yourself started:
Set up a schedule
If you want to start a money making blog you will need to set yourself up a schedule. People that own profitable blogs post useful content on a regular basis, which is at least 2-3 times a week.
Social media and marketing
It takes some time for Google and other search engines to pick up on your new blog. Creating social media accounts and marketing your blog is a way to get your blog out there and to get more page views.
I have an Instagram, Facebook Page, Twitter, and a Pinterest account but I primarily focus on Instagram and Pinterest. It’s impossible for me right now to master all different types of social media so right now I’m trying to focus on those two. I do post to all of my social media accounts but I’m focusing my growth on those specific two.
I love Instagram because I love looking at pictures and I seem to find less negativity and drama on there compared to some of the other social media accounts out there. I’m also focusing on Pinterest because Pinterest is considered a search engine and I’ve heard about bloggers that have had great results and growth from using Pinterest. Right now I’m using Tailwind which is an app that you can schedule your Pinterest Pins at certain times. Click here to get a one month free trial of Tailwind. I promise you’ll find it really useful and you can’t beat getting a whole month for free! You don’t even need to enter any payment information to get the free month.
